Featured Tips and Tricks for TECAN Gemini Software

Invalid Operand when moving LiHA.
If you've ever received the error message "Invalid Operand" here are a few of the causes.

1. Having a plate carrier with 4 plate position in the Y-direction and telling the arm to pipette outside of its range. For example, telling tip 1 to move to well 96 of a plate on site 4 of the carrier would put the arm outside of its mechanical range. You would see the "Invalid Operand Error".

2. Having smaller syringes than 1.0mL and pipetting at speeds that exceed the maximum pipetting range for the dilutor motor will also produce this error. Typically it displays only when you run the protocol. The system goes along, may perform its aspiration and then prior to executing the dispense step you see "Invalid Operand".

First Dispense of Multidispense volume is too low
Many times this is related to the rack dimensions as well as the liquid level offset when liquid detecting. If you detect the liquid level and then start to track down as you aspirate your container dimensions need to be accurate or the tips will not stay submerged in the liquid. This will cause the tips to pull some air at the end of the aspiration draw. This air then gets transfered over to the first dispense (possibly the second depending on the volume.)

These items and much more are covered in the Tecan training offered by KONNIS.
